HUNKY Rob Kazinsky was left heartbroken by the storyline that sees his on-screen baby fighting for her life.
Rob, who plays Sean Slater, struggled to cope as he prepared for the plot.
In the show, Sean’s wife Roxy has their baby two months early after falling ill.
BBC bosses arranged for Rob, 24, and Rita Simons, 31, who plays Roxy, to visit a neonatal unit at Barnet hospital, north London.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, Rob, who picked up best actor at this year’s Inside Soap Awards, said: “We got shown round the wards.
“Nurses spoke to us about what we would be going through if we were really having a premature baby. I was left completely heartbroken looking at the tiny babies, some of which were no bigger than my hand.
“I feel so sorry for the parents who have to go through it for real.”
Rita said it was easier for her because she had already been on the tour.
She said: “I have had twins, so before they were born I had to prepare for an early labour because that’s what usually happens when you are expecting two.
“It’s still awful to see the little ’uns though, they look so helpless.”
Rob also defended the paedophile storyline that has Tony King (Chris Coghill, 33) having an affair with schoolgirl Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty, 16).
More than 200 people have complained about the plot.
But Rob said: “It’s not nice, it’s not pretty, but it’s real life.
“EastEnders is based on real life, we are not afraid to discuss the issues that some people may like to forget are going on in the world.”
